The East stand that was never built

I was recently sent this planning permission diagram of the proposed redevelopment of the East Stand in 2006 which I have never seen before.

The 2006 planning application can still be found on Newham council’s website.

It states: ‘Demolition of the existing East Stand (current capacity is 4698) and the erection of a new East Stand, including infilling of the North-East and South-East corners providing physical links to both the Centenary and Bobby Moore Stands, to accommodate 10,404 spectators, to give a final stadium capacity of 40,356.’

Reference. No: 04/1519 | Received: Friday 03 Mar 2006 | Validated: Friday 03 Mar 2006 | Status: Application Withdrawn

I understand Planning Permission for the East Stand was first granted to West Ham United in 1999 but later lapsed in 2004. This new application was made in March 2006 but was later withdrawn by the club for reasons unknown. Newham Planning Apllication Website Link

In January 2007 this planning report from the Greater London Authority stated West Ham United were required to make a £1 million contribution to upgrade Upton Park Underground station. In this report Newham council suggested It anticipated that the application will be recommended for approval and the Greater London Authority said “The rebuilding of West Ham’s east stand is welcomed”.

Below is the image West Ham published in programmes to illustrate the the overhead view of the new West and East stands.
