West Ham Were Right to Sack Tony Henry But the Soap Opera Won't End Here

I should be writing a post about the Brighton game this afternoon, but I think it’s important to comment on the events at the continuing soap opera that is West Ham United over the last forty-eight hours.

Last night West Ham sacked the Head of Recruitment, Tony Henry for racist comments contained in an email about African players. On the available evidence it was completely the right decision and one which we should all support. This was their statement…

West Ham United have today terminated the contract of Director of Player Recruitment, Tony Henry, with immediate effect following his unacceptable comments that were widely reported in the press. Our action follows a full and thorough investigation. West Ham United will not tolerate any type of discrimination. The West Ham United family is an inclusive one where, regardless of gender, age, ability, race, religion or sexual orientation, everybody feels welcome and included.”

Henry’s statement that the club didn’t want to sign more African players because they were usually difficult to handle was incendiary. He cited Sakho as an example, but then completely undermined his own view by praising Kouyate. The truth is that all players, wherever they come from will be “difficult” if they’re not playing. But there is one sentence from the email which may have further consequences for the club.

‘We don’t want any more Africans and he’s not good enough. I sent Thomas to watch him and the other lad last week and he said no. If Palace take them good luck.’

Henry then confirmed it was true and suggested it was a policy supported by club management.

‘Yeah, because we had three and we felt we didn’t particularly want any more African players.’

If it is ever discovered who the we is, there could be very big trouble indeed.

West Ham have a proud tradition of signing and bringing through black players from the youth team. Tony Henry’s comments undermine all the good work that has been done fighting racism and promoting equality at the club. He had to go, but I fear this sorry tale won’t end here.
