Is Marco Borriello's season over?

There were unconfirmed reports yesterday evening that West Ham’s on-loan striker Marco Borriello may be out for the rest of the season through injury. There has been mounting speculation on the web that the on-loan Italian striker could be out for the rest of the campaign with a muscle injury. This has subsequently been reported by KUMB, who are keeping a watching brief on the issue.

Having joined West Ham in the January window, the Roma striker has, so far, made just two brief appearances from the substitutes bench against Aston Villa and Norwich City. It will certainly be bad fortune if this does prove to be the end of Borriello’s season with us. We await an official confirmation or denial from the club.

There have also been other reports that Spurs have joined Arsenal and Man Utd is nurturing an interest in West Ham central defender, Winston Reid. If true, the club will face serious bids for the New Zealand captain. If we have any genuine ambition, the club should pre-empt any bids by agreeing a new long term deal with Reid. After all, how can we ever hope to join the top elite group of top clubs if we sell our best players to them. Undoubtedly, much will depend on the size of the fee offered. But any sale of Reid will only reinforce the impression that West Ham remain a ‘selling club.’ And will do nothing to substantiate ongoing club rhetoric about ‘taking the club forward.’

Elsewhere, it also been widely reported that West Ham are interested in signing Charlton’s 18 year old forward, Diego Poyet. The son of the Sunderland manager has impressed this season in a Charlton side struggling in the Championship. However, the complication lies in the fact that the likes of Spurs and Arsenal are also said to be interested in the player. So, if West Ham are to be successful, they may need to bid early in the summer in order to secure the player.

Finally, the club website has confirmed that Richardo Vaz Te is fit and ready for a return to the first team, which is fortunate, considering the speculation about the nature of Borriello’s injury. Hopefully he can come in to the side and make some sort of impact for the remainder of the season? Vaz Te will always be remembered at West Ham for that winning Championship play off goal against Blackpool. However, assuming that we stay in the PL, will he figure amongst the names to be cleared out ahead of a summer strengthening of the squad for the 2014-15 season?
