West Ham v Chelsea: Player Performance Results

I pretty much agreed with that…. We deserved something from the game, but you could see why we got nothing with Ilan up front… He was abysmal in my eyes, truly abysmal and I try not to OVER criticise our players. It's a shame Cole couldn't start, or Diamanti. Parker was outstanding, Green was very good and I don't know why we've been playing Spector out of position at LB when Daprela is so promising – apart from a few rookie errors (not that Spector has been doing a TERRIBLE job – although he looked worse at RB strangely). Promising to see Gabbidon back doing well! Them games are so strange – you go into them thinking, 'wouldn't it be good IF'… then you come out of it thinking … 'we SHOULD have got a point'. Parker's goal was our goal of the season so far for me.

    • IantheHammer says:

Hatden, Zola made the decision not to start with Cole for whatever reason (injured/kick up back side) but the issue is that he didn't bring Cole or Diamanti on till it was too late. Even Stan should have come on earlier. Its the same every week.
Hull have sacked Brown so now I'm really worried the next man in there gets them a win or 2 & then we're in trouble 9as if winning only five games so far isn't trouble enough)

    • Headmaster says:

Fair points, Hayden. Not quite sure why it attracted the thumbs down police but, anywaysup, have rectified that!

  2. Graybo says:

I thought Hansen gave quite a balanced view of things on MotD. His analysis of Upson v Drogba was a fair assessment. When you saw all the clips highlighting that personal little battle in quick succession I don't think our lad did that bad a job.

I was listening to FiveLive commentary on Saturday, and Steve Claridge was commenting that not many teams would have lived with Chelsea. To have gone in at 1-1 was a credit, in his view.

I will say that, given the current personnel, we are never going to live with Chelsea or ManYoo. My biggest disappointment of recent weeks was our capitulation to Notlob. I still think people are panicking uduly on here, and I reiterate my support for Zola and Clarke. We are revovering from a stormy period and. We will survive.

    • Goatygav says:

I agree Graybo. The two games I've taken the boy to this year have been massively disappointing (Blackburn and Bolton) but, despite this, I'm still convinced that GZ will become a very good manager. We need to give him the time to do this. Shame that Gold and Sullivan won't though.

      • Graybo says:

I've just had my weekly email from Gianfranco (chuckle) and kids tix for Wolves are 'from' £8.50. I reckon that having inflicted those performances against Blackburn and Notlob on you and yours, Goatygav, they should let you both in for nothing.

        • Goatygav says:

You're not kidding mate. I reckon free burgers at half time too – delivered to our seats (tried to get a hot dog for the lad in the Trevor Brooking Lower but gave up).

    • IantheHammer says:

I hope your right Graybo, I'm very, very worried.

    • kimse3 says:

Graybo we are becoming a minority but I am with you. Zola and Clarke have had the crappiest of hands to play with during their tenure. I really don't get why Ilan was allowed to play more than 20 minutes though. I was at the game and it was like playing with ten men.

I do wonder if our not so gracious owners had a say in who played on Saturday.

    • Headmaster says:

When you look at Burnley's recent performances, I make the defeat up their our worst result of the season, Graybo. I'm currently with Ian (below) and very worried too. I hate the phrase 'must win game' because we usually don't. Wolves is just such a game now and no mistaking.

      • Graybo says:

        Hi ya, Headmaster,
I know what you mean about 'must win game' syndrome. It's horrible.

I believe that’s one of the things that separates champions from also-rans. For champions every game is a must-win game. We've proved in the past that when we reach the point of no return we can turn in a string of results. Let's hope we've reached that point now.

  3. broganq says:

It's been a while since I posted and I'd like to add my thoughts to our current plight.

    PART ONE
We must retain Zola and Clarke for the remainder of the season and if we do I believe we will survive. It's interesting to read Parker's view of Zola. I find Parker to be the ideal modern footballer and a solid, down to earth bloke. No idiot, that's for sure and he's worked under a few different managers. I think the best bet for next year is to keep Zola and release Clarke. He seems to want to move onto the role of manager anyway. Then I think Zola and the two D's should hire a very experienced assistant to help in Zola's continued improvement.

  4. broganq says:

    PART TWO
I don't see Zola through rose tinted glasses, never have. In fact I was one to question him very early on in the season. But I do think he deserves another year. There will be a lot of changes in the summer, a hell of a lot of players to be offloaded, a new plan for future success to be drawn up.

It appears the new kids coming into U18's have phenominal talent, even in Carr's eyes, so we have great things to look forward to. With a couple more years experience I believe Zola could fashion them, along with the likes of Stanislas, Tomkins, Spence, Nouble, Collison, Edgar, to name just a few, into a formidable team.

Parker and Zola must stay at the club.

  5. DevoDevo says:

I obviously saw a different game at Chelsea as, apart from one 20 minute spell in which we equalised it was one-way traffic.

I've tried to defend Zola at times on here due to his experience and outside influences, but he is getting so many basic decisions wrong, I feel he should be relieved of the main job and become an assistant to somebody more experienced.

Hull have made the decision to sack Brown this morning, I wonder of the two David's are having similar thoughts?

  6. Shropshire says:

I think now it's 'when' rather than 'if' GZ & SC are relieved of their duties. I think most of us agree that the playing staff we have should give us a top 10 finish, but the fact is we are probably going to finish bottom five. (I just hope it's 16th or 17th) This tells me that even though the players, apparently, all love GZ, they do not perform for him on the pitch or, more likely, he does not give them the right instructions before they go out on the pitch or whilst they are out there.
Personally I still think it comes down to leadership and unfortunately we are lacking in that area both on and off the pitch.
Wolves and Stoke are now absolutely massive for us. Let's hope the team and manager can rise to the occasion.
    COYI.

    • chrischris says:

I've got us finishing 3 from bottom under zola, complete shambles!!! most people on here wanna give zola another year because they think we are going to finish above burnley and hull,,,,,,no chance!!!! zolas team chops and changes every week, sorry we're all over the shop!!!!!! I'm going arsenal weekend, its 1 of only a handful of away games i've been this season,I'm expecting changes again hopefully with spector and Koshat!!! dropped.

  7. Braderz says:

Looking at what has happened at Hull today, must have give the two Daves a thaught about GZ and SC. Parker though said that the whole team are right behind zola so it is interesting stuff but what we are seeing on the pitch quite honestly is crap, we must be brave and attack against Arsenal, wether we play Parker or not is another thing as we will need him for other fixtures but does this defeat the object as if to say well lets just go there without scotty give it a go and if we loose, nevermind, to me that would be wrong, we must go there in our minds thinking that we can win the game, Diamanti, Cole and McCarthy all must start, simple as. Mido and Ilan can for now get splinters on there backside by remaining on the bench. Spector must NOT start, either put Gabbidon on the right with Upson and Tomins in the centre or put Behrami on the right. We can see the problem so why can't blooming Zola.

  8. chrischris says:

infact teams completely minging in all areas!

    • leehammer says:

chris- you laff mate but now hull who everyone on here says is worse than us have just dropped phill the tan brown and it looks like it could well be alan curbs in charge by the pompey game. i would not have any doubt in zola and us staying up if he just kept the same shape and formation and didnt move players around all the time . then they would at least know what they were suppose to do .

  9. andyhammer says:

I think the vast majority of Hammers fans have been considerably understanding with the Manager and coach's performance. We have all realized that there are real extenuating circumstances for the lack of results. All number of factors have impeded Zola's ability to do the job.
However for the last 2 months or so, these circumstances do not now exist.

The number one gripe on here seems to be Zola's inability to spot failings of either players or systems, and change them before the situation is irrecoverable.
Unfortunately he seems happy to sit on his hands(Man Utd and Valencia/ Malouda and Chelsea) and wait until we are a couple of goals down before making a belated change.

In both games, West Ham were looking actually quite comfortable apart from one area of weakness. I would go as far as to say we were getting on top in those other areas but such was the glaring nature of Spector/Diamanti and Spector/Ilan's ability to defend all game, the opposing team could have racked up a rugby score.
Zola does not seem to see the bleeding obvious and cut off the problems at source.

We will lose to Arsenal, but my concern is the Wolves game. I personally would like Zola to grown into the role and improve as a manager. Last season indicated that he could become a very good one for us. The worry is that he does not seem to be learning and in fact, he is getting worse at his job. Clarke seems to have no effect on our defense. It is worse than ever.

I would say that if we do lose or draw to Wolves, a change must take place, because we are not a school for apprentice managers. We need guidance. If Zola does not have the ability now to beat a poor Wolves team, then he must leave or be shown the door.

  10. andyhammer says:

If we fail to beat Wolves I can only really think of these available managers.

    1.Curbishley.
    Postives:
Premiership experience in beating the drop.
    Knows the club.

    Negatives:
Unpopular with fans and the suing of the club did not help.

    2.Hughes.
    Positives:
    Premiership experience.
Would have learned from Alex Ferguson

    Negatives.
No obvious affinity with the club.
Paul Ince also learned from Alex Ferguson and he is a poor manager.
Didn't have player's respect at Man City

    Slaven Bilic
    Positives:
    History with the club
Does not over complicate things. Sends out the best players in positions.
    Will hold respect of players

    Negatives
No Premiership management experience. No club Management experience
    Volatile.

    Paulo Di Canio

    Positives
Loved by all at the club
Would gain initial respect of players

    Negatives
    Extremely volatile
    No management experience
Would surely fall out with the owners

    Steve Clarke
    Positives
    Knows the players
Supposed to be a great student of the game.
Mourinho said he would go on and be a great manager

    Negatives
    Linked with Zola
    No management experience
Does not seem to be organizing the back line

For me, none of these really leap off the page. None of these get excited. I don't know if any of you can think of any other managers but if there are any, they escape me.

The best candidate in my opinion would be Slaven Bilic but even he would be a big risk. The more likely would be Mark Hughes.

    • mrDET says:

How about Mcleish, knows the two Ds,a few of their players have been link to us.

    • Goatygav says:

Out of that lot I'd have Bilic. Whilst he doesn't have Premier League experience he has cut it at International level.

As much as I love him, for what he did for our club, I don't think the timing would be right for PDC.

Undecided about Steve Clarke. In time I think he'll be a great manager but I don't know about right now.

Curbs or Pardew would both be backward steps – we need to move on with someone new not go back. I liked both of them but going back rarely works.

I think Mark Hughes would do a decent job. He's done well everywhere he's gone (Wales, Blackburn & Man City – before they had megabucks as well as after). I agree about the lack of motivation where our club's concerned. He twice had the opportunity to join us as a player and decided to go elsewhere (a great shame as he was a terrific player).

If GZ does move on I've just got this feeling that many fans will be calling for his replacement to be replaced in 9-12 months – and will probably get what they wish for. We're never going to build anything if the foundations of the team get kicked away every 12 – 18 months only to start all over again.

      • andyhammer says:

Agreed. We should stick with a manager through thick and thin but at least we need to see some improvement. However little.
It is also incredibly important that we don't get relegated and our results are looking fairly ominous. We could be going into the Wolves game on the end of a real hammering from Arsenal.

If we lose to Arsenal, which we most probably will, then at least let's see some progress.

I have supported Zola all the way but lately he just isn't spotting the obvious.

I dont think the marks were to far off and the top 4 were spot on,Daprela put in another good shift with very little help in front of him,Should IMO stay in for the next few games.
Does anyone know how far off Collison,Ilunga and Fabs are from coming back ? If all fit my starting 11 would be,
    Green
    Behrami
    Gabbidon
    Upson
    Deprela
    Fabs
    Parker
    Collison
    Ilunga
    Diamanti
    Cole.
Giving us both width for attack and players that know how to defend when on the offensive.
We must now stick with the same team and a 4-4-2 formation.
As for changing the manager I feel we should ride it out untill the end of the season and see what is avaliable in the summer how much we have to spend players sold and were we finish up.
Players we must keep Parker Green Cole Collison Behrami Deprela and maybe Diamanti if he is played up front just behind Cole and NOT wide.
Still it could be worse we could be Pompey.

    COYI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. _E1 says:

IF Zola does go I wonder if Mclish would fancy joining up with the 2 Davids again ?
He seems to have done a good job with limited resources and they are playing SOME decent football.

  14. chrischris says:

    green
    faubert upson gabbs ilunga
    collison parker behrami deprela
    diamanti or dyer
    ,…………cole…………………..

E1…thats a team, on its day that could beat anyone but some of these are injured and parkers 1 yellow from a 4 game ban!!

    • leehammer says:

deprela now on the left wing ………..behrami in left mid ………WTF !!!!! . players that have played in one or two at a push positions all there time since about 11 years old ..not having a go mate but you carnt kep asking players to play in positions one week to the next it knocks there confidence, motivation at training, and the night before a game well they wont give a fuck about theee performance knowing the manger will get flak about playing them out of postion

  15. chrischris says:

    beckham out parker in?
its all about right place right time.
    capello at the bridge?
Scotty you might have just got your wish, personally I would start you with gerrard.

  16. _E1 says:

Chris I did say IF all fit ?
and I would have Daprela and Ilunga the other way around and the same with Fabs and Behrami.with Collison and Parker in the middle.
AS for Parker I would think he is less likley to get booked against Arsenal than Wolves?

  17. Jolly says:

    Evening all,

Just off topic – has anyone tried the BBC predictor:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem…

4 time ive tried it –
    Arsenal Champions,
Citeh 4th, Pompey Burnley defo down
last relegation place either us or Wigan – someone tell me where i'm going wrong?!?!?!?

  18. edi2spuds says:

As usual, we are all ready to cut our own throats to stay in the premiership… it is sooo boring gentlemen, please change the record.

We should give GZ & SC as much time as possible, even if relegation comes calling… the top teams in any league are usually the the teams with long-term managers. A team are a group of people who stick together, through good or through bad, no?

There are some cases where I agree, the manager has to go… e.g. Pardew with the gambling/ womanising and losing everyones respct. The uninspiring football played at Bolton under Megson (to be fair to him, he was achieving the results they wanted) Our best ever times were with Dodgy Harry. Why? He was a talented bloke, who we gave 7 years to… Arguably there was Greenwood and Lyall too, but weren't they repeatedly relegated and promoted? – I'm too young to remember.

I understand that with new owners come new management – just like in most organisations and companies. But we will be repeating the same mistakes if we keeping sacking our manager and coaching staff.

    COYI

    • Goatygav says:

Exactly right edi2spuds. Teams are built – develop and grow over a period of time. Continual dismantling of the foundations every 12-18 months mean that nothing ever has the chance to flourish. We all knew that it was GZ's first league manager's role yet he hasn't been given the time to learn from his mistakes.

You're also absolutely bang on about the successful clubs being the ones that stick by their managers. Gianfranco will become a good manager in time – I'd like that to be with us and not with someone else.

To quote "Running on the Spot" by the Jam: –

"Thought we'd be piling up the building blocks
The structure never seems to get any higher
'Cause we keep kicking out the foundations
Which stand useless while our lives falls down."

I suspect that the two Davids will replace the team management in the Summer. How long before the messages of the stuck record return again?

  19. _E1 says:

you got to laugh I've just done it and we finished 13th with 41 points !!!
    and pompey stayup.
Chelsea win by a point in front of Arsenal Hull wigan and burnley go down
and the really good bit spurs were 9th. Man City 4th.
    I'd be happy with that.

  20. edi2spuds says:

As usual, we are all ready to cut our own throats to stay in the premiership… it is sooo boring gentlemen, please change the record.

  21. edi2spuds says:

I'd like to go on to say that the constant changing of manager just keeps putting us in the same position 16 months down the line… we gave Harry 7 years, and he was arguably a best manager ever…

    • _E1 says:

No way Redknapp is our best manager ever he won nothing worth shouting about he wasted a fortune on the transfere market How can that make him the best ever manager. If you are Just looking at the pl then I would have to say yes with a best finish of 5th. I get your point we should keep the faith in Zola after all he has'nt yet made as many cock up's as Arry did in the begining.
If we are going to change then the new manager must be a Scott as they seem to be the best at the moment IMO.

    • chrischris says:

      stop talking crap.

  22. edi2spuds says:

oops! sorry about my repeat comments… my browser is getting a bit confused

  23. AussieGraham says:

Zola has never been able to do a Redknapp and buy and turn over players quickly ,if only he had access to large amounts of cash like Citeh I am sure anyone could be a decent manager.
To be a top manager you will make many mistakes but learn from your errors and I am sure a proud man like Zola wont give up it is just all of us fans want a magic wand and instant success, well guess what it takes time even Mark Hughes at Citeh would have needed a lot of time so what hope have we?very little, especially if we play musical chairs with managers, mind you Guus Hiddink is availiable if the 2 Dave.s want to spend their money.

  24. chrischris says:

    To the above.
Give Zola another season and it will all come together
    Based on what?????
the glorious football before our eyes?
    complete tosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. chrischris says:

we need an old head, not some modern player with big ideas.
We need a manager like Pulis or Hodgson who get results based on the players their given,Zola's thought he could employ the 4 3 3 played by Barca madrid and chelsea with average players LOL,what a pratt!!!!!!!!!!!
With the 2 davids now incharge theres never going to be any big money to spend so we need an experinced tactical manager who can do it on a shoestring.

  26. Interesting to see some comments on here about who could be our next Manager. Whether it happens right now I doubt it (unless we lose to Wolves maybe), but in the Summer even if we stay up, both Zola and Clarke are TOAST.

They say you can tell a lot about any Manager by the quality and success of his first signing and some of those mentioned above signed as follows:

Mark Hughes (Blackburn) – Benni McCarthy
Alex McLeish (at Birmingham) – James McFadden
Curbishley (West Ham) – Luis Boa Morte
Zola – Diego Tristan (ok I know he had no money)
    Pardew – Hayden Mullins
    PDC – never managed
Bilic – never managed a club side

OK so a few hit and miss signings in there, but you get the general idea.

  27. AussieGraham says:

Pulis or Woy would be nuts to come to us but how long is it before you give a manager the sack? What money would be availiable,we were told 8 mill in the jan transfer window and we spent 2! people have to be realistic if the Dave,s found 100 mill to be budgeted for new players then we would be an attractive club to manage but knowing what we know about them you would be better off just dreaming it is not going to happen.
Realistically they have a 7 year plan which for some of us is not good enough however in Guus Hiddink, yeah big salary but the right man to speed up the process and shake up the club he would be my only choice but he wont come if he has only 2 bob to spend.Ian Dowie is the bookies fav for the Hull job good luck Hull he aint the messiah!

  28. Roshi says:

Now that Beckham falls into the West Ham wish list for signing players, over 34, long term injury, can't get a regular spot in his Italian team, what do you think the chances of him signing for us are for next season!

  29. chrischris says:

a team consisting of green upson faubert parker behrami cole collison diamanti to name but a few should not be struggling like this its criminal really,so if your gunna post defending zola and clarke have a think first.

    • Roshi says:

It's the same as any business Chris, the product can be the best in the World but if the management and marketing behind it are rubbish then the product will always be rubbish.
Unfortunately we have management with inexperience and it has to be said, some pretty ordinary players who are at present holding back the good players.
At a top team that balance is reversed where you have more good players than ordinary players which flatters the ordinary players. You notice this when a so called ordinary leaves a top club and turns out not to be the player everyone thought he was whilst playing with top players.

    • chris had a thought and out of that list i would only retain the services of parker and pepperami. the rest are at best average players. i will admit that zolas lack of reaction to what is going wrong during the game concerns me. more so the fact that clarke is not pointing out the defensive failings. that said there is not a better than average manager that would touch this club with a bargepole. you voted for pardew, what the same pardew that played harewood before tevez and mullins over mascherano, and you have the neck to tell other posters to stop talking crap!

  30. chrischris says:

In all my time watching the hammers I have never known a west ham side to move the ball so slow and so badly, especially in the last third, watching westham vs newcastle last night even in 1979!!! we were moving the ball quicker, pass pass shot goal!! job done 5 nil.

  31. leehammer says:

A lot of people on here are in support of zola/clarke and understand what there position has been over the past few months. what i will ask is how many of you will come on here and be positve after the wolves game, personally zola only has results left in the locker now ( wins only ). iam going wolves and will be behind the team and the boys. but if we lose thats it for zola i hope . after this weekend we could be level on points with the worst team i have seen this seaon try to play football..the players we have at the club (not including that spud mido)we should not even be in this position.

  32. Braderz says:

I think the problem with Zola is that he seems to much of a softy, even when we loose he just looks disapointed, never angry. We need a manager who will go in at half time if we are loosing, shout at the players and threaten them to get there acts together or get dropped, we need some inspiration in the dressing room, i mean i don't know what is said but i can't imagine that it would be that bad. We need a strong manager who will pull the team together and make them play 110% every single game and give us no reason to moan if we loose. What we are seeing are the odd few for example Parker who is giving his heart and soul every week for the club with the others giving an average performance. Wether we get rid of him now is something i don't agree with as it could either be a disaster or our saviour but i don't think it is worth the risk, wait until the end of the season where hopefully we are still in the prem and we can then make much needed changes to push this club in the right direction.

  33. chrischris says:

Zola's comment on Mccarthy in training"he was slow at the beginning of the week but by the end was improving" Great!!!!! improvings not good enough mate!
