Zipping It

Since they took over the club, Messers Sullivan and Gold have never been off the media. Every day there is another newspaper report about the disastrous state of the club’s finances. Every day, one of them gives an interview to 5 Live or TalkSport. Don’t get me wrong, I think in many ways they have made a good start. But you know what? I think a period of silence would be welcome. Clearly this is something Gianfranco Zola would agree with. Today in the Daily Mail, David Sullivan talks about the need for salary cuts in the summer. He may be right. But why air this dirty linen in public? Zola has issued a quick riposte…

The article [by Sullivan] should have been done at a different time instead of just before a match like tomorrow’s. “It would have been better to say what was said at another time and, maybe, talk to us [the players and staff] before the newspapers.” He added: “I am not happy about it, I don’t think it does any good for the team.

Quite so. Careless talk costs points. And possibly managers.

Bye bye Zola, thanks for the short time you spent with us. Looks like the minds of the owners have been made up for them now, he was never 'THEIR' man, and we all know what happens when a new owner takes control, look at curbs.

  2. westham88 says:

Some people need to know when to keep it shut. i like the fact the Davids keep the fans up todate but Zola is right he should be told first and not just befor a big match. i think its a stupid move to tell players we want them to take a pay cut at the same time as we need them to work twice as hard to keep us up. Football is a money orientated game with few players having major loyalty to their club. i feel this will demotivate the team and they wont care because come the end of the season they will go to a team who pay the wages they want regardless if we stay up or not.
The Davids have made the dark clouds above Upton park larger and larger by being in the papers every day saying how much of a mess we are in ect.
a bad atmosphere around west ham could play a massive factor in the last 14 games.
i think Zola publicly questioning the Davids willl lead to him being sacked within the next week.

  3. parleyson says:

    DG's response:

"I can see Zola's counter argument that these issues are best not brought to light so close to a game, and yes he has a point," said Sullivan. "I am not upset for him expressing it, however if my comments galvanise the team and they produce a performance then it would have been worthwhile.

"I hope it bonds the team and the manager closer together, so they go out and say they are going to show everybody what they can do, what they are made of. People at West Ham have got to face reality. West Ham have won four of their last 24 games, so who can blame me for wanting to take a strong stance if that ends up motivating people?

"But, no I am not going to take offence at Zola taking issue. He is a lovely man, and an honourable man, and a lovely person, so he is quite entitled to his opinion, and in some ways I sympathise with his view. I partly agree with it, but it is very much a subjective view, and if it wins us the game, then I will be happy to have said it."

Parleyson, I'm not sure whats more annoying…

The fact that after 17 years at a previous club he hasn't got a clue what team spirit is or how to achieve it… or the fact that one of them has made ANOTHER statement in public…

      ENOUGH ALREADY……….. just give it a rest….

      • SirTrevor says:

I think Sullivan has just been acting like the kid who got ownership of the sweetshop – he is so pleased with himself that he can't contain it. Hopefully Zola's rant will be a shot across the bows and Sullivan will now go about his business out of the media.

    • LoftyPerch says:

In other words…he realises he has Fcuk'd up big time. The little weasel has clearly just had a kick up the nuts from Gold.
First it was Brady putting her six 9 stilettos in it with talk of West Ham Olympic, now Short Stop has trapped off without thinking.
What next…twinning us with Millwall? I wouldn't put in past them.

    • pjdpjd says:

what a plum.make him put on his pub landlords jacket walk out on the pitch and apologise for being a big one of his own products

  4. Just reading comments from DS as posted on KUMB. Apparently he was trying to galvanise the team – yea right!

  5. johnnycash says:

There is no doubt that Gold and Sullivan are starting to lose the support of the fans. They started out well, giving an honest summary of the clubs financial woes. Now as nearly everyone here has prevoiusly said, they should tone it down a tad.
As for fans blaming them for the loss on Saturday and the prevoius poor results agaist Portsmouth and Blackburn, thats just stupid.
Wasn't it only a week ago they got in three strikers and everyone was saying how good they are. A week is a long long time in football.
Only Zola and Clark can be blamed for poor results, their tactics have been questionable, their side selection even more so.
I am not calling for them to be sacked, far from it but the blame for any results on the pitch should remain rightly at Zola's feet, no-one elses.
And lets be honest, if we was to be relegated, Zola and Clark and the players wouldn't worry about a 25% paycut, they would be off to richer pastures quicker then Celtichammer's keyboard when he is ranting against Gold and Sullivan!

    • brooking says:

At last a reasonable post. It's true, Gold and Sullivan should a little less vocal about cost cutting but recent poor results and whatever happens in tomorrows game can only be levelled at the team manager. Is he not the one who has put us in this position. Most people tell me we have a better team then those around us. Zola it appears, is now starting to hide behind the off field matters rather then take some responsibilty himself. I think just because he is very likable, he has got of lightly.

  6. Sunderland and Wigan have both taken early leads and with Hull winning saturday we could get left behind

  7. HammersWest says:

Another thing which has been really bothering me for the last couple of days was the statement that we could "allow" the big names to leave and bring on the Academy boys, grow our own team…..sounds good, but I can see in a couple of years that we could "allow" the big names, (that would be Tompkins, Collison et al) and bring on the Academy boys, and so on. Sound familiar?? Scares the heck out of me. Didn't want G&S, gave them a chance, now sure I didn't want them.
We need to get behind the team and Zola though, they need our backing

    • brooking says:

I think most fans on here are right behind Zola and the team, but lets face facts.Zola has brought the club to where we are now, not Gold or Sullivan, there comments might not of helped this week but the three strikers they brought in last week should.

      • HammersWest says:

Agreed on the strikers, my concern is not only this season, but four or five years down the road, I think we are once again going to be a selling team

      • celtichammer says:

Why didnt they bring in genuine goalkeeping competition for Green. full back cover so someone to provide natural width on the left?
Dont tell me that players were not available, if you are willing to pay then players are always available.
BG proved it when he broke the chequebook out during the great escape and we were in a far worse position then than we are now

        • brooking says:

BG the man responsible for putting us in the position we are in now? Nice quote, left up to him we would be in administration and in all likelyhood, gone the way of Aldershot

  8. cahillcc says:

Just checked Paddy Power for an update on odds for the next premier league manager to be sacked… and the message says:

"This market might be in our Live Betting section"…

Its as if Paddy Power expect this to be complete in 90 minutes…

    • You just beat me to it CC but I also checked the Live Betting…not there. This suggests to me that the betting has been Suspended. As far as I know this only happens when a major run of betting takes place on one specific outcome..Maybe I was right and Mouth and Mouthier are trying to get back some of their outlay or cover the Constructive Dismissal Costs which will surely come their way if Zola leaves.

  9. safhammer says:

I trust that Zola will be able to see that these tow rich clowns are just after media publicity and no more. They have the money and now want a bit of a fuss made of them. So Zola, forget their shinanigans and concentrate on the job at hand, i.e let us finish in the top 10….. I can dream cant I?
There is one positive, it will add to the atmosphere on Wednesday. The brummies will be a bit apprehensive about us. I hope our big guns can capitalise while they are trying to work us out….I can drream….. 1 nil to the irons,,easy.

  10. AussieGraham says:

Celtic BG robbed us blind he was a thief so did Terry Brown and he was a West Ham Fan!WARNING!The Gollivans are as well!

  11. cahillcc says:

On a more positive note: Burnley, Bolton and Portsmouth all losing…

    Every little helps…

    • westham88 says:

portmouth getting a draw is a good thing for us as it brings sunderland into the fight, they are 4 points above us and have not won in ages. portsmouth are still 6 points below us with a poor goal difference

  12. AussieGraham says:

Zola 4-7 to last the season at West Ham with skybet must be the best bet of all time even this pair would not get rid of him would they?

  13. AussieGraham says:

It is painful to watch these other crap matches tonight but hopefully we benefit Fulham cruising,City not safe yet hope stoke can draw.

  14. PaulODecanyo says:

G&S want Zola out, that's been clear from the moment they took over. They are no fools so this latest outburst must be deliberate. They will know it's destabilising and might push GZ out. They know it is likely to affect the attitude of some of the players to both playing and staying. They clearly have a plan that involves constantly reminding the world of the terrible state of our finances. Their carrot to all this stick is the Olympic stadium. What the hell is their plan? Like many posting here I fear the worst out of all this

  15. great post, the dildo brothers have just pissed on their chips. thumbs up from me. COYI

  16. Managers you can sack; Owners you cannot :-(

  17. VanHammer says:

Frank Nouble starting for West Brom today

  18. leehammer says:

AND NOW ! we all know why gold has done all the media work for brum and at the start of the west ham take over ! the man clearly needs his arse wiping as i wouldent see him getting 2 foot into any board room PLEASE PLEASE MR GOLD ! put him back in the box till the end of the season because i didnt know there was auditions for a new gremlin movie .

  19. OK I know its a BIG IF but IF we were to win tomorrow as things stand we would go up to 14th. All I can ask if that all of you down at the Boleyn with me get behind the team as we have never done before

  20. westham88 says:

the results went for us tonight with Bolton, Burnley losing and sunderland, portmouth and wigan only getting a point.
Ethrington had another great game for Stoke, the sort of wide man we need right now lol

  21. Gotta say happy with results so far in particular the Pompey equaliser…keeps Sunderland in the mix. Hopefully Bobby Z has ensured Fulham's three points with the third goal, so the day has improved somewhat or at least my optimism has anyway. Just hope we can do a job tomorrow night now.

  22. AussieGraham says:

Matty Etherington outstanding for Stoke and another player we were supposedly after was better, Adam Johnson Man City these 2 could have set up a hundred chances but that is why I am 67th in the Daily Mail fantasy league currently and not The Hammers Manager! How good is Tevez and what about his penalty?

  23. FishySuffolk says:

I hope that this current statement by David Sullivan does not cause a rift between himself & Gianfranco. It now requires a period of media silence over what is planned at WH. OK the damage has been done & GZ is upset over this which could have been dealt with behind closed doors & before tomorrows match against Brum. After tonights results we could move up to 14th IF WE WIN!.
Todays media statements could spur us on in defiance of DS & show that we are able to stay in this league. I just hope that GZ gets it right & our boys do us proud tomorrow. Back them all the way guys. 3-1 to the Hammers.Lol!

  24. Braderz says:

Looking at the resutls tonight things have worked out extremely well for us and it is now done to us to get a win and move up to 14th in the legue, we have a massive opportunity but Brum are going to be extremely difficult to beat. We must be agressive from the 1st whistle to the last as that is what cost us gainst Burnley, so my new team lines up like this:

    Green

    Faubert Upson Tomkins Ilunga
    Kovac
    Behrami Diamanti
    Parker
    Cole Ilan

With Mido available on the bench along with stanislav, collison and Noble we will have a much better looking side to begin with which will have more experience and we can bring others on when we need to, I don't care wether we play well or not, if we win by playing crap i really couldn't care less, a win is a win, i will pray and predict for a very scrappy 1-0 win for us but it will be very tough, il be there in my claret and blue chering the boys on.

    COYI!!!!!!

  25. westham88 says:

    Green
    faubert upson tomkins illunga
    collison parker behrami stanislas
    mido cole

that wouls be my team for tomorrow but it all depends if the players turn up because i thought Zola put out the best starting line u[p out against Burnley and they did start playing untill we were 2-0 down. so i just want us to field a team that look like they give a shit.
if only all our team were like scott Parker.
i would like to add he should be made captin

  26. _E1 says:

    Q : What do you get in a Double D ?
A: A pair of big TITS.
I rest my case this is not about saving the club this is about taking over doing it their way and earning a few bob along the way same as Brum the gave the club a good grounding then took the profit and run. WEST HAM SUPPORTERS MY ARSE pair of spivs.

  27. _E1 says:

    Is Franco still out ?
3 – 5 – 2 for me tomorrow all out attack 3 pts and we are up to 15 th
    Green
    Tomkins DaCosta Upson
    .
    Faubert Beharmi Parker Stanislas Daprela

    Cole Franco/ Ilan

clean sheet and a couple of goals Happy day's

    COYI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pele's 13 year old son has started training with santos,NOW he's got to be worth a punt with an invitation to THE ACADEMY lol

  29. D4NNYP says:

I do believe Sullivan has taken the focus away from Zola & the team….. but maybe in good way!

I don't know what Sullivan's motivation was for his original statement… You can speculate whether it was to undermine Zola or to motivate players …

But I doubt the Zola and the team will get much stick tomorrow. It's looks like Sullivan is going to take the heat for the team… Intentionally or not I don't know…

But a win tomorrow, and his comments could look rather shrewd…

  30. HammerRay says:

I'll try to keep it short. Have read everyone comments and agree with virtually everyone. These were moronic statements at the worst time and I can only assume it was designed to unsettle practically everyone at the Club, especially GZ.
Words fail me other than that. If Zola and the boys get a result tomorrow it will serve as a great big V sign to Sullivan, as to what he can achieve DESPITE his constant back-biting and convenient leaks to the press at inappropriate times. We are cleverer than you think Sullivan and subtlety is not a strong point of yours. Look above for Lofty's unbeatable summary

  31. Goatygav says:

Usually I'm extremely positive with my comments on this blog – so much so that I've been accused of wearing "Claret & Blue tinted glasses" in the past. Fair enough.

On this occasion, however, I feel annoyed enough to suggest a chorus of "Sullivan – Shut your Mouth- Sullivan, Sullivan – Shut your Mouth" shortly followed by "Are you Ratner – Are you Ratner – Are you Ratner in disguise."

  32. safhammer says:

Results went our way today so maybe things will change for us. Tomorrow 1-0 to us and upto 14th. Sounds great!
And Sullivan..just shut up! You've paid the money, now let the boys deliver on the field without your media hogging antics.
Oh yes…and in Zola we trust. He is okay. Give him a break.

  33. Yes he knows exactly what he is doing; that is what we are worried about.

  34. Another fact I found out. Karen Brady's salary will only be covered for the first year. Then she is on the payroll. I assume that it will only be part time as she has her TV work with Lawd Sugar and her other commitments. I also expect her to take a 25% salary cut as soon as she is on the books.

  36. FishySuffolk says:

Well this morning looks a little brighter on the managerial front. David Sullivan has come out in an open interview and publicly backed GZ saying that he is entitled to his opinion. With tonights game against Brum DS said this is not a grudge match , however if Brum win I will be proved right & if WH win Gz will be proved right. Let us all hope that we are able to break Brum current winning spell and come away with 3points.
