Shame about the result, for 65 minutes we outfought and outplayed them.
One of our best performances of the season, which shows what we can achieve when we get the basics right. If Cole had played for Nouble, we would have won easy. Fabianski#s save from Stanislas the turning point.
Behrami MOM – outstanding till the end and again, it has to be said, Kovac was good. Jiminez totally out of his depth again and, until he lost the header to Eduardo, Upson was immense. Tomkins poor.
New year, same results!
PS. Very encouraging debut from Daprela as well. Why hasn't he been playing???
Not sure about Daprela and it looks as though your comments are crweating a negative field for someone. It is a pity we were unable to get the second goal
however we are now able to concentrate on the PL and make this game count in our favour.
behrami 10\\10 unbelievable today, also thought daprella deserves a run in the team after todays performance. But overall proud of every player today even kovac gets a 6.Lets put today behind us and hammer wolves if we play like that till the end of the season we will definately stay up COYI
Well there are definite positives to take from this game. We held Arsenal for over 70minutes and despite our injuries/suspensions our boys did us proud. If we had a full team available we would have won.
This is the FACup and we must remain positive and look at this game as a win on the confidence front to help us now build on our PL battle starting with Wolves at home next wk.
We must not go away downhearted as this was a game we were unlikely to win against Arsenal and supposedly the tie of the round. However Leeds have pushed us somewhat into the shadows with their win over MU. Well done to them
they now get Harrys boys in round 4.
Daprela looked a lot better than Ilunga has. And got forward too! But an extraordinarily one-footed player; had a shot with his right if he had taken it!
Jimenez by far the worst player on the pitch. I mean by far. There were times he was just standing around. As the Hammers 'attacked'! Horrible signing, horrible progress. Get rid of him instantly. Each manager has his favorites who he keeps playing even though they are awful; this appears to be Zola's. (Skills? No effort!)
Hopefully Arsenal and Liverpool and others (probably Capello too) watched Upson get beat by the smaller Eduardo. I wouldn't sign him for 10 million pounds on that basis, nor should he play for England. You can't switch off that like that. (And be captain???)
Stanislas needs to learn to take his chances. Didn't see enough of Freddie; he was on the pitch 8 minutes before he touched the ball the first time.
Just watched the game and am slightly disapointed as natural when you loose a game but i think in a way it is good as we can now put 100% concentration on the legue, the way we went out i felt was harsh as i think we played well but just got tired in the end and their goals were very good finishes. Good to see the youngsters having a go but just were frightened to have a go at goal when they had the chance especialy daprela who made some great runs forward but just didn't shoot which was fustrating. I think Behrami was outstanding and had a fantastic game throughout the full 90 minutes. Diamanti had an on off game, at times he looks brilliant but other times can be very fustrating. Never mind, i wasn' too fussed abot the cup.
Another point that everyone is mentioning is the G&S takeover, i wouldn't believe anything from a newspaper wether they have quotes or whatever, SSN is a good place to look and even more so the clubs official website. If this does happen like most of you i will not be very happy as i think he could be a chance for disaster, intermarket are seemingly lodging their bid tommorrow and fernandes may well be interested so i will hold out some hope that one of them takes control of west ham as i see them as a much more positive owners of our club. Just wait and see.
Think we found our back 5. Greens best game of the season.
Would play Kovac-Parker-Behrami as a 3 and give Diamanti the free role as we have no wingers.
If we can play the rest of the season like that I think we will be ok.
i for one am a proud hammer tonight, i thought for 65 mins we we're by far the better side, glad to see some young lads getting an opportunity, Nouble was exceptional for such a young lad, coming into a massive game i thought he handled himself brilliantly, both him and daprela are very raw at the moment but they both look like they have very bright futures, onwards and upwards to the Wolves game now, with the return of Parker, noble, cole, franco atc just around the corner, as well as the impending takeover the only way is up! COYI!!
Green 7
Faubert 6
Upson 6
Tomkins 6
Daprela 7
Diamanti 7
Kovac 7
Behrami 9
Stanislas 7
Nouble 8
Jiminez 6
Edgar 5
Sears 5
couldn't agree much more their m8.
This is nonsense
whats your thoughts then handon??
Sorry mate, I was bit harsh on you.
Just could not agree with the ratings of Jimenez, Nouble, Sears and Edgar.
Nouble 8?
did you see the game….i hope he never plays for us again. The guy is over 6 foot and lost EVERY header. He seemed lazy and lost the ball at every opportunity
Tariq it was his first proper start and he seemed overawed. Give the kid a break. To say he should never play for us again when he is a babe is a bit mean.
the fella is little more than a kid… up against two world class centre halves, and respected internationals and i thougt his first touch, strength and pace caused them genuine problems, u cant deny that, put things into perspective and cut the kid some slack
okay to say i hope he never plays for us again was harsh but he was poor. He only got 5.2 on the skysports website. People here seem to think he was fantastic……he was never in a millions years 8!
8 suggests that he played a key role in the game.
Also those 'world class' centre halves have conceeded a lot more goals this season than arsenal have in previous years. Plus Nouble towers over Gallas and was beaten every time.
I personally thought that his FT was quite poor. He appears not to use his weeker left, too
Braderz, The G/S show has been constantly in the news and has been rebuffed by CB/S. This is the Mirror we are talking about. We hope that this week will be a defining moment in WH history and we are able to look forward to a new decade of stability and optimism.
Hope your right m8, 2010 to be a stable year at the hammers but would much rather someone else instead of G&S, but i do hope that we here more news about the takeover but something concrete and complete so that we can look forwards to a better future. Lets hope we hear some news soon.
Tomorrow is another day!lol!!
Tomorrow is aparenmtly the day intermaket will lodge their bid, will see. lol
Behrami was outstanding, MOTM and the whole team played well, for once I thought Kovac had a good game, but diamanti has to control that temperament, or at least the captain should be there to diffuse the situation. Daprela looks like a good deal Nouble still learning his trade, Greenie made some good saves (OK shoot me down) and both he and Upson are now cup-tied. Lets hope that is a deliberate statement. All in all a good day at the office shame we lost but a good showing. Loved the team play, with everyone working as a Team. Bring on 2010!!
Like most of the comments on here, a very dissapointing afternoon in terms of the result but a lot of hope fpr the future, I thought the young left back looked good but Nouble looked a little way from being a first teamer. behrami looked immense and when Parkers back, no one will get an easy time against our midfield. Jiminez just doesn't look interested i'd have preffered to see Freddie on from the start supporting Nouble but then what do I know lol.As for the take over, what ever happens I hope GZ gets more than the 8 million to spend than what''s been rumoured Gold & Co have promised
Has Jiminez got a Klinsmann clause in his loan contract? He was, and has been on a regular basis, garbage.
The main problem today was playing with 9 men for the first hour, this meant that we could give them a game until 70 minutes by which time fitness played its part.
The secondary problem was ourt goalkeeper beibng rubbish, has anyone else, like myself given up hope of seeing Green make a save? If we need to sell anyone in the window sell Green.
Can't believe you said Green was rubbish, he made an excellent double save, and also a great reflex save with his legs to mention just 2. I also thought his distribution today was better then it has been for some time. Rolling out the ball quickly to get counters started, something that has been missing in his game this season.
Just out of interest, who are the 2 you feel were not playing for the first hour?
Jiminez and Kovac were the two missing. I suspect those saying Kovac was good were getting confused with Behrami being almost impossibly everywhere.
On reflection the comment on Green may have been harsh in the context of todays game; surely you agree that his recent performances havent been what we might expect? I think it started with his sending off with England.
I do agree he hasn't been up to scratch recently, and defo since England sending off. but really felt today he was heading back to the old confident green. Fully agree on Jimenez, but Kovac? Usually I can't stand him, but I was accused of eing biased so now I keep a count of good things and awful things he does in the game, and today there were more good than bad, so for once I'll stand up for him, still not outstanding but at least useful
Gutted. Felt we deserved a draw on effort alone. I hoped we would stand up and be counted and we did. Tough to criticise anyone really. It wasn't flowing, on the carpet football but lots of positives, the biggest being the way every member of the team was up for it. If we can do that on our must win matches, we'll be okay.
Wasn't a bad performance. The youngsters did quite well, Nouble and Staislas looked very committed although I would like to see them have a go at goal when the chance appears as they seemed a little shot shy at times.
That said, when Nouble got a little space to pull the trigger he looked like he knew where the goal was and had plenty of power.
Add to that a mostly solid display by Faubert & Kovac, and a promising show from Daprela and despite what was thrown at us we stood up well for most part. Disappointed at Upson, should have got above Eduardo really and I think Green was unlucky for the ball to find the one place he couldn't reach as he justified his place with a great double save today.
However, Diamante has to sort himself out. He is capable of brilliance but for most of the game his passing was appalling, as was his choice of pass and his first touch. I lost count of how many times he gave the ball away. The goal and two great through balls aside, he achived little (though his effort was hard to fault).
And Jimenez. What is he for? Is he a footballer? He seems to have so little interest in the game. He doesn't run, he doesn't pass.
I understand that Mr Zola has great faith in him, but I think it is misplaced.
To be honest i was expecting this result. Though before the game i was extremely worried that the arsenal kids would embarrass us.
Was i watching a different game because Behrami didnt look outstanding. I thought he had a good game but i dont think anyone stood out. we have just been beaten by a very poor Arsenal side. I cant remember seeing arsenal playing so poor.
Two poor sides, the difference between us being the Arsenal substitutes in the second half.
After some of the posts on here i was really looking forward to seing Nouble. Fastest guy at the club? real talent for the future? You're having a laugh right? He was useless! He's like 6 foot 3 and he lost every header. Ther guy seems unable to jump. He constantly lost the ball and NEVER closed down the opposition. Sears should have come on after the first half. Im not conviced he's premiership standard but at least he tries.
I'm not annoyed at the result as this wasnt our first team
behrami was clearly outstanding, we was everywhere, the bloke is unbelievable, his stamina, commitment and determination is without doubt some of the best i've seen in my 28 years as a fan
My viewing:
Green 7 (some good saves today but can sometimes look nervy)
Daprela 7 (Had a real good go and made some great runs forward but sometimes needed help at the back)
Upson 6 (not his best day today, was an average game by his standards and should have prevented their second goal)
Tomkins 6 (Shows good awareness but often missed timed his leaps today)
Faubert 7 (Looked great going forward and tracked back extremely well today)
Diamanti 7 (Often has his momnets of wonder with his through balls and scored a goal but doesn't tackle enough and showed his temperment a bit today)
Kovac 7 (i thaught he had a very good game and is improving a lot but often has his old idiotic moments but good for his standard)
Behrami 10 (one word….. class)
Stanislav 7 (worked hard and did well down the wings but lost the ball on a few occasions but not bad)
Jimenez 6 (tried to get involved but strugled, he showed good touched but would then not know what to do with the ball, very fustrating)
Nouble 8 (may seem a high rating but for his first start i felt his work rate was brilliant, he held the ball up extremely well and just needs that extra encouragement to help some of his decisions, i sense a good player for the future)
A great hero of mine Kenneth E. Boulding once said “Nothing fails like success because we don't learn from it. We learn only from failure.”
I think that summed up today for us. There were times either side of the half where we simply brushed Arsenal aside with the pace, passing and tempo of our football. I had to count how many Behramis were on the part at one stage. We ran out of gas when they made their subs. Too many of our players simply were on tired legs at that stage and we didnt have viable options on the bench. We got undone by a decent Arsenal goal and a woeful attempt at a defensive header from Upson.
If we can reproduce that middle third of the game for longer periods with a stronger squad then I see no reason that we cant go unbeaten in the league this month and leave the relegation battle behind.
Green looked closer to his old self today and I agree completely with HammerWest about his improved distribtion. Daprela had a very good debut and has to be ahead of Specs in the pecking order to cover for Ilunga. Upson had a good game apart from the header but his performance as a captain was a disgrace. When they equalised we were crying out for a captain to reorganise the troops, to inspire to lead but as usual he was no where to be found. The sooner he goes the better. Tomkins had a few errors of judgement today but I still a massive talent. Faubert has probably his best game in a Hammers shirt and I wuoldnt bother wasting money on a first choice right back in the window, his improvement merits starting the rest of the campaign. Behrami, incredible, sheer passion and force of will, breathtaking at times. Kovac was very effective today and was much improved in his passing (even if he is never going to hit a 40yard defence spliiting slide rule pass). Diamanti, played deeper today, worked hard and epitomized our performance, took his goal brilliantly. Stan, I have always said he is the brightest young talent we have and everything I saw today confirmed that. He is a big game player at a very young age and will be huge for us in the coming seasons. Jimmi just hasnt taken to English football, I wont slag the guy off as I think at times today he really tried, he is woefully lacking in confidence but I think at times I see in him what Zola sees, I just doubt he will ever produce it with any consistency for us. Nouble should have answered Handons questions today, worked his socks off, won his headers and grew into the game second half but the pace was always going to get to him. He defended corners very well and under Zola I think he will develop into a great player. Nice to see Freddy back at Upton Park although his impact was minimal.
Next up Wolves and if we put in a shit then like we did today then we should take 3 points and start our recovery. I started with a quote so I may as well end with one, the famous US architect Charles Luckman once said “Success is that old ABC – ability, breaks, and courage.” well we have two of them in spades all we need is the breaks!
Good summary Celtic; I agree with all you say, except I'm less convinced about Stan. His potential is high, but to me he doesn't deliver the final pass or shot at the moment.
Behrami (8) was a warrior today.
Diamanti (7), for all his mis-placed passes and dodgy temperament, is the one player we have at the moment who is capable of unlocking a defence with a moment of brilliance.
Other than that I thought everyone had a decent game (and will be getting 6 from me) and gave it 100%, with the exception of super-jock (Jimmy-nez!) – 4
Head – if they had a "decent" game shouldn't they be awarded 7 (good) rather than 6 (average)?
I gave Behrami a 9 – he really was outstanding and Faubert, Upson, Daprela, Kovac , Diamanti and Stanislas a 7.
I also gave Jimmi a 4, which was an improvenment on his 3 against spurs.
I thought Kovac merited an 8. The way he and Behrami broke things down and started them back up for us was tremendous. I felt quite proud of the team for most of the game.
Think you missed an 'f' there CH in the word 'shift' – lol!
I'm amazed but not surprised at some of the comments so far, but I guess it just proves that we all see games in different ways! For me, Kovac had another excellent game and was responsible for breaking up many of the Arsenal attacks. Behrami was superb, and the two of them easily dealt with much of what Arsenal did for most of the game. As far as the young lads are concerned, I cannot support the criticism levelled at Nouble. Given his experience and the opposition he gave a workmanlike performance, nothing more or less. Daprela I thought had a very good debut and if he plays like that consistently then he must surely have a real chance next year. I think the whole team did us proud today, and although the better team won, it needed some fresh & experienced legs being brought on to do it. That was a luxury we didn't have.
I was at the game mate and after the comments on here from you and others im beginning to seriously question my assessment of the game.
I stand by my comments on Nouble…when i said i hope he never plays for us again i was too harsh. but he looked poor and the people around me agreed.
I think more than anything im dissappointed as i was really looking forward to seeing him play after some of the hype he has received on here.
I thought Behrami and Diamani were our best players and i wouldnt like to criticise anyone else. But that was a very poor arsenal side and we would have struggled against a lot of lower division sides.
I was also there my friend. As regards Nouble, if he was judged against what Cole or Franco could do then he was very poor, but he has spent probably no more than 20 minutes playinf first team football so far. He did a job, and hopefully will mature. The trouble is I think he was built up as the saviour and failed to live up to false expectations. I think perhaps we are actually agreeing on balance! As regards Arsenal, yes it was not a full strength team, but I think for much of the first half particularly we made them look ordinary. That team would have given most prem sides a run for their money today.
Totally agree re Kovac, scaly – a great performance.
lol whoops! appologies to anyone offended by the mistake! I cant edit it now to correct it either so sorry!
Hammers played well until just before the equaliser when they started playing too deep. It could have been tiredness, but I think it is a tactic that GZ likes to employ. It puts us under constant pressure and without the likes of James Collins or an up-for-the-fight skipper, we cannot withstand sieges. Behrami was top class (and unlike Scotty, does not waste possession) I was puzzled by Nouble's performance, apparently he is very quick, but we never saw it; also he was quite hesitant when he had half chances – I think it must have been nerves. What the game did show, I thought, was how good a fit Cole is (he took on both Vermalen and Gallas on his own earlier this season). Finally, Kovac was terrific in getting his foot in and breaking up Arse moves BUT then he was horrific in giving the ball away in really bad positions.
Think Sears will be going back to Palace on Monday.
Think the back 5 were good today and could be the best back line we have, saying that think Faubert still needs to work on his crossing and would take £10 Million for Upson (Think it will be a Benjani and money swap deal)
If Green carrys on playing like this he will make the World Cup.
Also I think we should play with 3 central midfields moving forward. Parker – Kovac – Behrami and 2 up front when we have 2 strikers and leave Diamanti to do what he wants wants.
Nouble undecided on but would play him just to defend corners.

You are right re Nouble and corners – he was an asset
I know my comments havent been too popular tonight but i just cant see how we were great today? The states dont lie.
we only had 32% of the possession, only 3 corners compared to arsenals 14!!!!!
Tariq, don't take comment to heart mate, its not a question of popularity, just opinions. Where did 32% possession come from? Someone else earlier was quoting a different figure, I think higher, but neither to me is an indicator of how we faired. To put it simply, we were expected to lose, and some thought we were in for a bit of a hiding. We lost yes, but for much of the game we were a match for them. We were beaten by Wenger bringing on two pairs of fresh & experienced legs in my opinion.
Unfortunately, I was unable to get to the game but watched it on SKY.
I agree with most of what has been said on here particularly about Behrami's great game as well as a very good game by Kovac, but, in my opinion, not quite up to his great performance against Chelsea. Green was almost back to his best, although I do wonder whether he shouldn't have reached the second goal. Daprela had a very good first start and, on recent form, could be challenging Ilunga for the left back position on a regular basis . Upson was sound except for being beaten to the ball by Eduardo for the second goal; and Faubert is beginning to show what a real asset he has become at right back. Tomkins made a few errors but was still sound in most of what he did and provided good support to the middle of the defense.
Jiminez was almost anonymous throughout the game as was Freddie Sears during the short time he was on the pitch; but i am afraid that it was ever thus with both of them.
The big question mark is Nouble. He certainly did not perform as well as his pre-match advocates were suggesting, but he showed promise. I guess his failure in the air was the biggest disappointment and his hesitancy in front of goal also caused groans from this particular supporter. But, he worked very hard, chased and featured prominently throughout the time he was on the pitch and when I compare him to my recollections of the much maligned Carlton Cole of 18 months ago, Nouble was certainly no worse and maybe just a little better. I also think that with Franco alongside him he will be a lot more dangerous than he appeared today. I certainly think he is one for the future and needs to get a lot more exposure at this level to bring out the best in him.
I was disappointed in Junior; I felt that, apart from his excellent shot on goal that was well saved by Fabianski, he was poor. He made too many missed passes and lost tackles, but I know he can play better. The same applies to Diamanti, who, although often frustrating, is always capable of producing a match winning goal or pass.
