What a very sad day for Dean Ashton and all West Ham fans. The club website has just confirmed that Ashton has been forced to retire. It’s a bitter blow for such a hugely talented player. He really could have been one of West Ham’s greatest players and it is such a shame to see such a huge talent unfulfilled. I am sure we all wish him well with whatever he does in the future.

  1. very very sad news. what about this for an idea for someone so young to do in football……..tony carr's understudy?

  2. Graybo says:

Sad news, which has been a long time coming. I think most of us on here suspected this would be the outcome a while ago, but it doesn't diminish the sense of frustration.

I don't know much about his background but I am sure all of us wish him well in a new career.

  3. A sad day for Deano and the fans who saw him play.
We all wish him well and hope he finds an enjoyable new career.

A sad sad day for West Ham and for English football.

  5. AussieGraham says:

Surely sooner or later the luck must get better?

  6. EarlsCHammer says:

I am gutted, for him, for West Ham, and for England.

Unless you've followed Deano, people don't appreciate how talented he really was. A fit Dean Ashton going to this World Cup would make a massive difference.

A gentleman, a hero of mine personally, and an incredibly talented football.

I hope he's made enough cash already so he'll never be hard up.

Let's get him in with Tony Carr, great suggestion jonthelesbian.

    A sad, sad, day.

I'll never forget singing his name, on the first day of the season VS Wigan a couple of seasons back, two crackers in the first 12 minutes or so – it felt like we'd won the league!

    Good luck, Dean!!!

  7. That's a real shame for him, and us. Oh what could have been!

  8. Rob19 says:

class player, intellegent, strong, can finish he really had evrything

such a shame for the guy

  9. Such a blow for him first and foremost, but also a massive loss for both West Ham and England! Thoughts are with you Deano.

A very sad day for football, West Ham, but more importantly, Dean Ashton.

I had heard this many many months ago from a very good source and mentioned it on here when talks of his comeback were muted.

I trust those on here that criticised Dean for his laziness to get fit and pie eating jibes will find it within themselves to apologise. Some people really do need to take a look at themselves.

Dean – I wish you the best of luck for the future and thank you for the memories that you left. Without injury, you would have been a certainty for the world cup and West ham wouldn't be where we are now.

    Appoint Roeder
    Roeder gets brain tumours
    Relegated with extremely talented team
sell off youngsters to watch them excel elsewhere and for national team
Lost Fa cup final even though dominated it.
Hugely disappointing after first year in prem with Pardew
    Appoint curbishley
    Sheff utd saga
Taken over rich bankers in iceland
    banks go bust
taken over by bank with no money
    Curbishley successfully sues club
Good first season(see roeder, curbishley)under zola replaced by terrible 2nd season
    mass injuries to best players
Best player retires from game at only 26
Anything else? a swarm of locusts descending?
will we ever get some positive long term good luck and positive action.
COYI, time for the luck to change surely!!!!!

  14. Surreyfox says:

Such terribly sad news. He had the makings of becoming a legend at West Ham, and would have been a certainty for this World Cup.

One of those rarities, a striker with a brain! Great finisher with both feet and superb in the air. Knew how to bring others in to play. Absolutely superb in my eyes.

Oh what could have been (again)

Let’s hope that West Ham do the right thing by him and find a role for him in the coaching staff. Remember how young John Lyall was when he retired, and what a fantastic manager he became (arguably the best we’ve ever had)

    Best of luck Deano.

  15. Munky says:

Finally officially confirmed. We've all been expecting it but it still makes for very sad reading.
I hope we are adequately compensated, I hope Deano is adequately compensated, more importantly, I hope he is able to move on from this and is successful in whatever he decides to do.
I second Devo's comment regarding all the sneering about pies and pizza.
Thanks Deano, and good luck fella.

  16. just read all the comments on sky from all the fans over england, quite touching to see how many other fans could see his potential.i do hope west ham keep him in the fold and find him a coaching role,he will be sorley missed.

  17. andyhammer says:

With a fit Deano in the team I felt confident against any team that we would cause problems. I really can't see any other figure in world football with the sheer power, touch and finishing prowess that he had.
I would be feeling an awful lot more confident that England would come back with the World cup had Dean Ashton, with a full, uninterrupted season under his belt, been playing now.
Players of his type are so rare now – you look all over the World and I can't really see many. Drogba although very strong, is a different type of player to ashton-more pace.
Deano could stay up around the box, confident that he would hold up the ball and arm defenders off him.
The nearest player I think was Christian Vieri of Italy, but I feel Deano had more class. Such a shame for the English game and more importantly Dean.

  18. Berkshire Hammer says:

Sad Sad new today but it was a long time coming.

some good comments from the FA
Taylor was saddened by the news of Ashton’s retirement and insisted the PFA would now do all they could to assist him in the future. “It’s extremely sad. He was a great talent and it is one of the hazards of the profession. We want to have a word with him about his future, to see if he wants to stay in the game. We will offer him various courses – coaching, media – there’s a whole host of opportunities really if he wants to stay connected with the game.”

  19. Sad news indeed Thanks for giving what you did Deano, all the very best for the future.

  20. Headmaster says:

Of course I share in the sadness for Deano but I cannot help feeling a sense of utter frustration that it has taken so long to make official what many of us realised a full year ago – i.e that he will never again kick a ball in anger.

    • LoftyPerch says:

Headers…I believe it is the insurance companies who set the time-table for eventual retirement through injury. They almost demand amputation before agreeing that a player is finished.
The added complication of who is liable will now kick in. England's insurers are already making noises that Deano regained his fitness and was severely crocked a second tine having made a comeback for the Hammers. Obviously West Ham's insurers have a different version of events.

  21. scalyback says:

I am very sad to see Deano finally admit he cannot continue; even if it was what many people had realised was the case some time ago. Perhaps now is not the time to debate that. Whatever the reason, I sincerely hope that the FA, PFA, EPL & WHU do the right thing so that he is fully compensated. I trust WHU/Scott Duxberry /Franco Zola to do this.

  24. tlovegrove says:

Such a shame and I feel for both West Ham and England, but most of all for Deano himself. He was such as classy player who could have had so much more. I hope he is fully compensated and enjoys a successful career in whatever he does.

  26. we will never know if he would have been as legendary as other centre forwards to grace the upton park turf, for me he didnt ever reach the heights of frankie mac, cottee, geoff, phsyco and the legend that was pop. very sad, however it does occur that the lack of movement for an established striker may well have been hindered by the reluctance to take in another high wage untill this situation was resolved. still a loss to the game and the club

  29. Handon says:

Dean Ashton was one of my favorites. He was a superb combination of an old-school centre forward and a modern, very technical poacher. Moreover, West Ham (fans, GZ) and the Three Lions lost a higly talented goalscorer. This is a sad day.

  33. D_McCailey says:

A real, real shame. I feel that Deano had the potential not only to be an England regular but an England legend. In my opinion he was the best player to pull on a Hammers shirt since Di Canio and the last couple of years have been incredibly frustrating and also incredibly sad.

I hope the club keep hold of him on the training staff – between him and Zola they could teach our strikers a thing or two! Maybe the new John Lyall, who I also believe retired at 26?

Whatever he does, I honestly wish him every success and happiness in the future.

    DEANO! DEANO! DEANO!

What a great shame. I really feel for Dean Ashton – I'm sure he must be devastated.

Let's hope he gets all the support and encouragement he needs to come to terms with this and then the opportunity to use his knowledge and ability in other ways – perhaps in coaching with West Ham, as already suggested previously.

    Good luck, Deano.
