Scott Duxbury Interview Part 4: I Won’t Sell to Tottenham

ID: Was there ever any prospect of getting Tevez back?
SD: With any player you never say never. He’s a player who made a huge contribution to us and a player I would love to see back at West Ham United but I think at the moment his aspirations are at a Champions League level, so when we’re in the Champions League, who knows.
So, no conversations have been had?
No, no, not at the moment.
But a new striker is absolutely crucial, isn’t it?
It’s not crucial, but Gianfranco has identified who he wants. He wants a creative, attacking midfielder, which we have got now in Jiminez and we’d like another striker to complement Cole, Ashton and Savio. At the moment we are in dialogue to sign Mancini and I am due over to Milan this weekend. The deal with Inter Milan is all but done so it is just down to the player. That will come down to his conversations with Gianfranco and whether he sees West Ham as a club he’d want to play for. The beauty about the way Gianfranco operates is that with previous managers the discussion would start with how much money do I have, and from that he determines which players he wants. We never talk about money with Gianfranco. He just identifies various players in various positions that he wants and then me and Gianuca will go off and try to secure them. On certain targets money will be the stumbling point but if you work hard and are creative there are ways to get around that. But it is a refreshing approach that Gianfranco has. He will identify players – Mancini, Jiminez, X,Y and Z. Mancini is the one we are getting close on but we are working on 3 or 4 other players in the same position that if we can’t move forward on Mancini we will move forward on.
Is there a worry that they always seem to be looking at foreign players? We’re more used to home grown talent or English players.
Gianfranco understands the heartbeat of the club has to be English because we are in the Premier League and if you look at our players – Collison, Noble, Tomkins, the spine – Green, Upson, Parker, Cole it’s English. He’s happy with his squad and he would go into battle with it again but what he wants to do is get three players with a much higher standard than perhaps what we’ve got, which will raise everybody. We are in dialogue, and we have been to be fair, with English players, who fit that bill, but for a variety of reasons, mostly economic, we’ve not been able to secure them.
When you say economic, you mean because of wage demands?
Yes but transfer fees too. Transfer inflation is massive. There are a lot of talented young English players in the Championship, or even the Premiership, we could get, but we’re looking for the finished article. We are looking for three players who will come in and give us more than what we have got at the moment.
So you are still looking for three players in total and want to offload some fringe players to get the squad down to 21?
Yes
Faubert and Davenport have come back. Presumably they might be ones you’re looking to ship out?
Absolutely, yes.
I see Tottenham might like Faubert. That would test your resolve not to deal with them again, wouldn’t it?
[laughs] I’m sure that’s not true! I think Faubert has higher standards as he was at Real Madrid. I think he will look for a slightly bigger club than Tottenham. We’ll see [smiles wickedly].
I know you said you’d never deal with Tottenham again, are you deadly serious about that?
The essence of the project is fans’ expectations. Fans do not want to see their club selling their best players to their most bitter local rivals. It’s nothing to do with Tottenham, it’s to do with our fans. There could be nothing more sickening than to see one of our top players playing for Tottenham. And there’s been a history of it unfortunately. That has to stop. One of the most powerful aspects of our current resurgence, which we must maintain, is that the fans are on board. It would sickening, an absolutely awful, awful thing if our best players left and went there. It’s why Craig Bellamy couldn’t go. And in the future, the same philosophy will apply.

Coming next in Part 5: Lucas Neill’s future.

  2. chris says:

To all spuds….You have wasted millions upon millions crap!!!! you have failed miserabley for the past 2 seasons now, trying to brake into the top 4.With the amount you have been spending of late you should of finished above Arsenal. You should of pumped the millions into the ground which is one of the worse in the prem.

  3. chris says:

    on crap

  4. James says:

A 6m bid for Scott Loach just confirms what everyone is saying here carteltheyid. You could get Stech for that…..oh wait a minute, no you couldn’t.

  5. hammertime says:

Hey everyone, way off topic here and completely unrelated but need some advice. I am a massive west ham fan from australia and i am coming to london in november and my dream of all time would be to see my hammers in action. This would completely warm me up so much and would be the greatest experience in ever. However when i am there we are scheduled to play away games and one being hull city i am sure of. I would like some advice how the best to go is about travelling to the game from london, like the safety, how fellow fans travel, when they leave etc. I am in london from about November 16 for a few days forward. If someone could please help me out i would greatly appreciate it.

  6. chris says:

Hammertime you are avin a laugh!

  7. West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Carteltheyid or Carteltheyidiot as u should be known quote “west hams demented obsession with being seen to be a “rival” and equal of spurs, is.”

I think we could all the say the same about Tottenscum’s rivally with Arsenal, you will never be there equal, face it they have a better team, better manager, better support and better stadium, they have achieved their potential and won meaningful trophies, what have Tottenscum won, the Carling Cup… lay off the medication son and face it WHU FC are better than you we nearly always finish higher in the premiership than you, last season we almost got wound up and went into administration, had no money to blow on transfers like you and finished within a couple of points of you. You have loads of money but like alchemists in reverse you buy great players and turn them to rubbish. So go on little troll disappear back to your rose coloured views you should aspire to where we are, we have produced most of the talent and kept it while it was at its best before you mangy scroungers bought it off us with a higher wage offer. We will have a legacy of England stars to leave behind you can keep your carling cup !

  8. James says:

The way Bryce explained it was like a breeze in the park. Did this actually happen because I cannot get past his calm tone. And why does his father have to talk to the aggreived parents? Very strange!

I do hope the spuds get Faubert and for the full 6 million. Nothing better than seeing them wash up and die.

The way the Spuds help us is by taking press coverage off us by making obscene player purchases like for that rubbish goal keeper. Amongst all that we will emerge with the likes of Mancini and the rest of the brazilian team haha!! We are playing the spuds and I love it!!

  9. Brad says:

I must admit it is quite funny how u spuds do waste your money on so much crap. SD sounds like a bit of a legend if you ask me. He gives a lot of information and cares about us fans. Mancini deal sounds great just really hope we can tie that 1 up, would be great. Jimenez is hopefully a great signing. Inter fans loved him so i hope we will, its a different game in the prem. Have to wait and see. I understand that Kelvin Davis has undergone a medical with west ham as a spare for green, so are they the three main players: Jimenez, Mancini and Davis. Will have to wait and see but i feel we need another defender. COY Irons!

  10. Roymondo says:

    Hammertime – I don’t understand Chris’s comment.
If you are over and want to go to an away game you need to contact the ticket office and get sorted. You will be unlikely to get in by paying on the gate although this sometimes happens if the full ticket allocation is not taken up.
How you get to Hull (or wherever) is up to you. Train, Car, Coach. You will just need to work that out.
    Hope this helps.

  11. Ross says:

    the last video, genius =]

  12. E1 says:

Nice one Goaty HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
nearl as funny as carteltheyid HA HA HA HA HA HA Classic HA HA HA HA HA
    COYI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Basildon Bob says:

All a bit quiet on here. Come on Ian where’s the next installment?

I see Kelvin Davis has been linked with us as back up to for Green. Not sure about this one, he has had his chance with a couple of teams and never seemed to take it. Would have liked to have seen Stech brought on this season, however in Zola we trust.

  14. eleenyc says:

Funny video but i can’t help but feel a little bad for Geordies.
I mean it’s really a shambles there. There’s no light at the end of the tunnel. As das fuhrer said. they must start fresh

  15. DevoDevo says:

Kyle Reid gone to the Blunts.

    30 million, apparently. ;)

  16. Goatygav says:

I remember a time under Lou McCari. I guess I can have empathy with the barcodes – you know – in their shoes and all that.

  17. Goatygav says:

Hammertime – don’t worry about safety too much. You’ll be fine both away from and at home watching West Ham. Things aren’t like they used to be mate.

You never know – you may even be able to get a lift with a West Ham Til I Die-er if you bung them a few quid.

  18. Clive Smith says:

These interviews with Duxberry are ok but I dont beleive a word he says what I want to know is where has all the money gone all we are signing are loan players a complete waste of time This club is going nowhere under this board no money we are going to struggle this year without a doubt despite what Zola says we do not have enough good players

  19. chris says:

Seems Dixon’s making progress, that’s a real plus, fingers crossed he comes through his rehab he’s a great player.
Dont think this Ashton leaving rumour holds any water, we need as many strikers as poss, cant see dyer holding up the ball up, he struggles to keep himself up!
Davis intrest, hope this does not mean Greens going,NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  20. IoDHammer says:

Nice comments from Green about how he is resting and looking forward to next season etc.

Do we now think there is still a chance of his leaving or what? Im not sure where we are at with him and the rumour mill! lol

  21. Brooking still the best says:

    Wheres part 5 Iain?

  22. Daveip1966 says:

The Fiver’s quote of the day:

“Even if I wrote notes, I wrote good things. I praised [those] people” – former Spurs defender Gica Popescu defends his role as an informer for Romania’s secret police in the late 1980s, which we’re sure is rich consolation to those he wrote about.

    Classy team, those Spuds

  23. eleenyc says:

    anyone heard about Parkers progress?

  24. E1 says:

    Clive smith:
The money has gone towards getting the club into a financialy stable position, giving key players better contracts and buying behrami and Illunga, loan deals with options to buy give the club time to see if the player is worth buying and for the player to see if he wants to stay on. As has been said in the interviews most of NEXT seasons TV money will be spent on players, this is all part of Project Football( a 5 year plan) this is only year 2.
Bottomline line the money has been used to put us in a postion to move forward as a club and upward as a team. So far the project has delivered and only time will tell.
    Enjoy the ride
    COYI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Van Der Elst says:

I would have been very happy to have offloaded the constantly crocked Bellamy onto Tottenham. If someone’s adamant on leaving we should get the best price we can from whoever we can.

  26. Wavid says:

Clive you should also read the KUMB interview with Duxbury too as this is explained inmore detail.

Part of the Project Football has been to ensure the club is financially stable and sefl sufficient, therefore the loan deals with options to buy and why the fringe players are being sold.

The interviews on here and KUMB have been very interesting and give a wider picture to the Project. It also explains the key role Duxbury has had in steading the club and pushing us forward, not just as a going concern business wise, but an exciting team with potential to win trophies. Cant wait for the new season to start!

  27. hammertime says:

Thanks a lot people like goatygav and Roymondo. Much needed advice there, yeh i will do anything it takes to be at a game cheering the boys on, fukn proudest moment of my life it will be!! Good to hear tht the safety isn’t as much of a concern these days, cos yeh i was just always wanting to know if i should travel with other hammers for tht extra safety. So when the tickets come out should i just ring the west ham ticket office and make a purchase through email or phone yeh?? Is it not to hard to get a ticket in the away end?? Yeh i’m sure if i met fellow west ham fans who were driving up to the game i would get a lift with them!
Chris you are a tool mate, wat the hell are you on about??
