The Bare Faced Cheek of Terry Brown

May 31st, 2008 - 12:27 pm

The Daily Telegraph reports this morning that former Hammers chairman Terry Brown has launched a High Court writ against the club for £5 million. Read the full story HERE.
The key passage is this…

Brown, who was the target of fans’ protests at Upton Park, claims he was sacked without notice and is seeking damages for the loss of his £492,000 yearly salary and chauffeur. He is also seeking recompense for loss of pension contributions and mileage allowance, as well as the use of eight seats in the directors’ box, hospitality places, and car parking for the rest of his life…. Brown says he agreed that he would resign as a club director and executive chairman in November 2006, becoming deputy vice-chairman, and a non-executive director, and would be given the title of honorary life vice president. He claims he was to be given eight seats in the directors’ box, eight hospitality places in the chairman’s suite, two tickets in the directors’ box and boardroom at away matches, two on-site parking spaces, and one parking space at away matches.

I hope the club contest this vigorously. How Terry Brown has the bare faced cheek to issue these proceedings is anyone’s guess. Through his mismanagement of the club, West Ham nearly faced forced relegation last year. Terry Brown did very nicely out of West Ham. If by any sheer fluke he wins this case, I trust West Ham fans will give him their customary welcome if he ever shows his face at the club again.

Anton Must Not Be Sold On The Cheap

May 30th, 2008 - 11:05 pm

Various websites and newspapers are reporting that West Ham are willing to entertain bids of £5 million for Anton Ferdinand. I’d like to think these reports are rubbish, but there is a degree of consistency about them. Surely to God he is worth more than that, not that I think he should be sold in the first place. His form last season was consistently good, with fewer of the howlers which he has in the past been prone to make. His partnership with Matthew Upson in the first half of the season blossomed to the extent that we had the best defensive record outside the Top Four.

If we are to sell him, he is surely worth at least £8 million.

The Day I Met … Steve Lomas

May 26th, 2008 - 10:20 am

Simon Spanner

I was in Florida last week on business, popped in to the local pub I use (the pub on 27th Street in Davenport, FL) when I was there to watch the us play the Pompey game was on the net and my wireless had gone down at the house I was staying in, so I ventured up there knowing it would be full of scousers watching them rob the Arse. When i sat down the barmaid said: “Simon do you know that bloke sitting 2 seats away?” I said no, not wanting to bother him as he was obviously on hols and I knew it was Steve Lomas, but she kept saying did I want his autograph? I said no as I was more interested in getting the game on my laptop.

Anyway as the afternoon wore on and i was joined by another hammers fan who was in the pub and the game wasn’t working out too well on the pc via China so I gave up and was chatting to Steve Lomas who is a thoroughly decent chap. No airs and graces that you might find with some others, he was just one of the lads in the pub for the day. He bought me a drink and even didn’t mind having his pic taken with me although one scouser had to get in on the act.

Turns out he was on his own for the afternoon and kids probably at disney for day! He shook hands when he left with me, 2 Rangers supporters and their scouse mate

Andy Johnson Linked Again

May 25th, 2008 - 10:15 pm

The News of the World again links us to Everton’s Andy Johnson. I like Johnson as a player, but he is incredibly injury prone, and I cannot see why we would need a player like him unless we were planning to sell Dean Ashton.

The Future of HAMMERS NEWS

May 22nd, 2008 - 11:53 am

I just got the latest issue of Hammers News, together with a cheque for £20.65 from the publishers. It appears that the club has decided not to renew the contract with M Press, who have been publishing it in recent years. I presume the publication will still continue. Anyone know any more details?

I must admit that I have long felt that HAMMERS NEWS had lost its way. It was too obsessed with glossy pictures to the detriment of the writing. I suspect the number of words has halved, with some pages only having a few paragraphs on them.

Saha & Diouf? You’re ‘Avin a Giraffe!

May 20th, 2008 - 11:39 am

I’m not sure how far Paul Doyle’s tongue was stuck in his cheek when he wrote THIS in today’s Guardian. He speculates that West Ham are interested in signing Louis Saha and El Hadhi-Diouf. Saha is a good player but do we really need yet another injury prone striker? I think not. We should have signed him when we had the chance eight years ago. As for Diouf, all I can say is Nooooooooooo!

The Day I Met … David Cross & Johnny Ayris

May 13th, 2008 - 11:43 pm

By Steve Anderton

Back in about 1980 – 1981 I played cricket for a local team in Essex. On this particular day we were due to play Hutton CC at King George Playing Fields in Brentwood. I kept wicket at the time and was surprised to see Psycho (David Cross) walk out to bat. As he scored 100 plus runs against us I had plenty of time to chat to him during his innings. When it was my turn to bat I had another opportunity to talk with him as he also was the wicket keeper.

At the end of the game he asked me if my wife and I would like to join him and his wife for a drink back at Hutton’s Club House. I thought this was just him being polite as it is courtesy after games to have a drink with the opposition, but in fact when we arrived at the club he immediately came over to me and insisted we join him and his wife as he had suggested earlier.

We stayed for at least 2 hours in his company and found him to be very different to his on pitch persona. He was as interested in my meagre footballing achievements (Essex Senior and Isthmian League) as I was in his. I will always remember him as a really nice guy.

Also my wife worked with the wife of Johnny Ayris and as such we became friendly for a while as we lived close by them in South Woodham Ferrers. Over dinner one night in our house John explained to me how his career got cut short by Ron “Chopper” Harris of Chelsea.

One last one is that after I stopped playing Saturday football I played for a Sunday morning team in Southend – on – Sea called Trinity. For a season where we got a good way in the National Sunday Cup we were managed by Anton Otulakowski. He was very unassuming and did not open up with many stories from his playing days.

Deano Oh No!

May 13th, 2008 - 10:43 am

Sky Sports News is reporting that Manchester United have tabled a £10 million bid for Dean Ashton. I think most of us would put money on the fact that they will, in the end, succeed in prizing him away from Upton Park. However, surely £10 million is a joke for a player who has scored 10 goals in 13 outings this season? We’ll be a laughing stock if he leaves for anything less than £15 million. Why on earth would Man U want a player who was valued at less than that anyway? Have we learned nothing from the past? What a joke it was to let Joe Cole go for £6 million … and any number of other players for less than their true worth.

I want Deano to stay. He and Bellamy would be a fearsome duo next season. But I fear it’s a partnership we will never see…

Dean Ashton Superstar

May 11th, 2008 - 11:19 pm

I’ll do a full match report tomorrow but here are some interesting facts about Deano…

He’s scored 10 goals in 13 starts this season, plus another one from 11 appearances off the bench.

And people moan about him. Dear oh dear.

If he can score at this rate when he’s not at full fitness, just imagine what he’ll achieve next season.
